About the Coalition
The Coalition to Preserve LA is a citywide, grassroots movement that aims to reform L.A.’s broken, rigged and unfair planning and land-use system through the Neighborhood Integrity Initiative, which has been placed on the March 7, 2017, ballot.
For too long, deep-pocketed, politically connected developers have controlled City Hall by shelling out millions in campaign contributions to L.A. politicians, who, in return, grant “spot-zoning” approvals for mega-projects that are not normally allowed under city rules.
Ordinary people, who have little clout at City Hall, suffer the consequences — increased gridlock traffic, the destruction of neighborhood character and the displacement of longtime residents, including senior citizens on fixed budgets and lower-income Angelenos.
With the Neighborhood Integrity Initiative, the Coalition to Preserve L.A. aims to reform City Hall by winning reasonable controls back for all Angelenos.
The Coalition to Preserve LA is underwritten, in large part, by AIDS Healthcare Foundation, a $1.3 billion non-profit whose legions of doctors and nurses are caring for more than 600,000 HIV/AIDS patients in 37 countries.
AHF also takes on social justice and fairness issues unrelated to AIDS. In the U.S., AHF is sponsoring ballot measures that aim to remove the Confederate flag from the Mississippi state flag and to lower high pharmacy costs in California and Ohio.
No funds granted for the care of AIDS patients are spent on the organization’s ballot campaigns. AHF raises its own advocacy funds to tackle social justice and fairness issues, which are in harmony with its mission. That mission is “cutting-edge medicine and advocacy regardless of ability to pay.”
Now, AHF, which was founded in Los Angeles in 1987 and has long been involved in the city’s civic world, has set its sights on the unfair developer control of L.A. City Hall that seriously impacts the lives of ordinary people.
